William Crawford – President 2016-2017

Vice President 2015-2016Board Member - Term 2016-2019 - Task Force Member, Member Benefits & Ethics

William is a commercial and residential real estate investor focused on the Carolinas. He owns Simple Storage Solutions which currently owns four self-storage locations and manages for other owners in the Upstate of South Carolina. Prior to establishing his own company, he was a District Manager for CubeSmart, one of the largest Self-Storage REITs in the nation. At CubeSmart, he was responsible for 24 properties across the Carolinas with a combined 1.4 million square feet of storage and office space, 12,000 tenants, 40 plus employees and $12.7 million in revenues. Before working in the industry, Mr. Crawford held multiple operation positions within the Target Corporation and gained experience in multi-unit retail management with The Pantry Inc., which was the largest convenience store operator in the southeast before being acquired by Circle K.

Brian Petersen – Vice President 2016-2017

Task Force Member, Target Efforts: Improvement of Meetings and Educational Content & Legislative Efforts

Mr. Petersen is the founder CEO, CIO of American Storage Group. His vision was to create a company that could provide research, acquisition, investment and management services for the storage market sector. He maintains and active role as Corporate Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer. His experience in the storage sector began in 2008 when he founded American Self Storage, LLC and purchased the first of its holdings. Since that time, under his direction, the company has expanded its holdings to 7 locations with multiple acquisitions planned in the near future.

Mr. Petersen has been a successful entrepreneur, an active real estate investor, builder, developer and private lender for 20 years in the residential and commercial sectors spanning over several states. Prior to becoming involved in real estate, he enjoyed a successful career in manufacturing, distribution, import and export in the forest products industry. He also gives back by being involved in several community organizations and is the current Mayor Pro-Tem for the City of Liberty, SC and is a USCG licensed Master Captain.

Rhett Heyward – Treasurer 2015-2016

Board Member Term 2015-2018, Task Force Chairman, Membership & Fundraising

Mr Heyward is Vice President of Operations at RES Management, responsible for over 1.4 Million Sq Ft of Storage and Retail space, 10,000 plus tenants, 40 plus employees, 20 plus facilities, with 9 Million gross revenue, spread throughout the Carolinas.  With 8 years of industry experience, he specializes in Call Center operations, Tenant Insurance, Feasibility Studies, Facility Design, Project Management, Auction Procedures, Quality and Cost Control, Marketing, and Corporate Level Initiatives.

Prior to joining RES Management in 2005, Mr Heyward built and managed three separate restaurant businesses in Columbia, SC, grossing a combined 1.5 million annually within three distinct markets.  After undergraduate studies, Mr Heyward worked as a field manager in one of the largest privately held restaurant companies in the United States, Golden Fried Corporation, in Dallas, TX, which also included relocation to Guadalajara, Mexico as a company consultant assisting in day to day operations and specials events.

Mr Heyward earned his B.A. in History from the University of the South, Sewanee in 1996 and a Masters in International Business Studies (MIBS) from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business with a concentration in Marketing in 2000.  During his post graduate studies, he interned for a year in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the marketing department of a bank management software provider, Sistran Consultores.  Mr Heyward speaks fluent Spanish, having lived in Spain, Mexico, and Argentina both as a student and in a working capacity.  He is married and has a 1 year old little girl.

J. Wallace – Executive Director

Jay Wallace puts his extensive information-technology background to use as President of Management BluePrints, managing the company’s software and hardware integration using process-efficiency models and cost-to-benefit analysis. He has instituted multiple new customer-service offerings and process improvements for his group of more than 18 self-storage locations in the Southeast, and has consulted with other operators since 2004. Jay has extensive experience building his company and brand through training, marketing and Web presence.

Jay has a B.S. in Business Administration with a minor in Computer Science from The Citadel, has spoken on multiple Self Storage & Management topics at industry conferences and has been actively involved in operating multiple associations, clubs and societies since 1998.

Brad Brodie – Board Member - Term 2014-2017 – Task Force Member, Membership & Fundraising

Brad Brodie is President of Storage Development, Inc, a turn-key self storage development company, and owner of the Storage R Us facilities in Columbia and Aiken South Carolina. After retirement from Polaroid Corporation, Brad relocated back to his roots in Aiken, SC in 1993. He built the first upscale climate controlled storage facility in Columbia, SC in 1995 and then obtained his unlimited general contractor’s license in both North and South Carolina. For the past nine years Brad has been building and developing storage facilities for other owners in both states. A strong advocate of strength in numbers, Brad’s primary focus within the SCSSA will be the increase in its membership base.

While on a football and baseball scholarship Brad obtained a degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Co-Founder and President of Lindsey Self Storage Group, John Lindsey graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Business Administration with a Commercial Real Estate Development Concentration. Licensed since 2008, his only focus has been self storage as he has explored brokerage, development and management over the past seven years while working on various projects in both North and South Carolina. John is also on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Self Storage Association, and is the President of the Self Storage Association of South Carolina, where he is also head of the Membership Benefits Committee and is the Founder of the President’s Circle. John is also a member of the National Self Storage Association Young Leaders Group. In addition to his active role in the self storage industry, John is on the Board of Directors of the Durham Academy Alumni Board, YEScarolina (based in Charleston, SC) and Caring House (based in Durham, NC).

Mike MacManus – Board Member Term 2015-2018

2013 & 2014 Task Force Chairman, Member Benefits & Ethics, Target Efforts: Market Research for the industry members. Creating and executing an annual survey on pricing and best practices. Through better knowledge, owners and managers will be able to maximize value in their facilities.

Mike MacManus brings over thirty years of business experience to his role as Self Storage Associate with Marcus & Millichap. Joining Southeast Self Storage Team in 2013, his focus is on the states of South Carolina and North Carolina where he holds a Brokers License in each. Prior to that, he was a Business Broker in Georgia for five years and also owned a company that specialized in marketing services for commercial real estate firms.

Mike is from the Carolinas, being raised in Fayetteville, NC. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has an MBA in Marketing from Georgia State University. He holds a Real Estate Broker License in the states of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina and is a Georgia State Registered Real Property Appraiser.

Michael Morrison – Board Member - Term 2014-2017 – Task Force Member, Legislative

Michael Morrison has been a licensed agent in South Carolina since 2006 and is a member of the Central Carolina Association of REALTORS® and the National Association of Realtors. He is also a broker in Alabama, North Carolina and Georgia. Prior to joining Midcoast Properties, he worked with Re/Max in both residential and commercial real estate, receiving Rookie of the Year for all of South Carolina Agents in 2010, and was top three in the nation first year sales for 2010. Michael is a native of South Carolina, growing up in Blythewood, South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of South Carolina. He currently owns two self storage facilities which enhances his knowledge and understanding of our industry.

Ms. Winfree is currently managing Interstate Self Storage, a 400+ unit facility in Greenville. Prior to coming to the self storage industry, Ms. Winfree spent 11 years in sales and management roles within the automotive industry.

In addition to being actively involved in managing Interstate Self Storage for the last 10 years, Stephanie also runs her own business services concierge company, and coordinates for La Jolla Property Management’s multiple commercial and residential properties. She is an active board member of the Mauldin Chamber of Commerce where she works closely with the Chamber director and the Ambassador staff on local events. Ms. Winfree has been commissioned as a South Carolina Notary Public since 2001.

George McCord, the principal owner and operator of Southeast Storage & Development Co. and the developer of Plantation Self Storage, passed away last week after a long illness.

George had more than 30 years of project-intensive self-storage experience including the development of facilities totaling nearly 1 million square feet of space. George served on the national Self-Storage Association Board of Directors from 2004 to 2006, and was president of the SSA Southeast Region in 2003. He was a long-standing member of the Georgia Self Storage Association and a founding member of the South Carolina Self Storage Association.

George presented at several Inside Self-Storage World Expos and submitted articles to Inside Self-Storage magazine on the topic of wine storage. His Plantation Self Storage chain, with four locations in Columbia, Bluffton, and Myrtle Beach, S.C., are renowned for their wine-storage services and amenities.

From 1991 to 1994, George served as chief development officer for American Monroe Ltd., a subsidiary of Chicago-based American Invsco Corp., where he was responsible for the acquisition and development of multi-family housing properties.  Prior to 1991, he supervised the construction and installation of a premier yacht harbor and marina for a private resort development in the Bahamas, and managed development and operations for a marina near Door County, Wis. He was also a former owner of the Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head Island, S.C.  Following his graduation from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., George received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

George lived on Hilton Head Island, S.C., with his wife, Joanne, and their three children.

10/16/2014 Heartfelt and Special Thanks goes out to Dale Eisenman for his decade plus of service to the Self Storage Industry in South Carolina. Dale has served the industry in many ways but his long and dedicated service to the Association has been especially beneficial. His efforts with keeping the group on task and moving in a positive direction have, in many ways, lead to the great success of the SSASC and its recent accomplishments of two new laws being passed in 2014 and over three years of excellent and well attended educational forums. His legal knowledge and insights have been leaned upon greatly and his presence will be notably missed. Dale’s efforts have gone a  long way to keeping the Self Storage industry alive and thriving in South Carolina.
